Period Conversations: Candice Chirwa and Ibanomonde Ngema

Open and informed conversations about menstruation are not merely a matter of comfort; they are a cornerstone of comprehensive sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) for young people. When young people feel comfortable discussing periods, they are more likely to seek support for menstrual irregularities, pain, or concerns that might otherwise go unaddressed due to embarrassment. By fostering environments where periods can be discussed openly and without shame, we empower a generation to make informed choices, protect their health, and realize their full potential.

On Menstrual Hygiene Day, May 28th, 2025, the Safeguard Young People (SYP) Programme, recognizing the tendency to overlook menstrual health as an intrinsic component of overall well-being and SRHR for youth, engaged Candice Chirwa (Minister of Menstruation) and Nomonde Ngema in a crucial conversation on this vital topic. We invite you to join in the conversation and contribute to creating and maintaining a period-friendly Africa.

SYP's partnership with the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (EKN) and the the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) ensures that young people, including boys and girls, receive a holistic understanding of their bodies and reproductive health, challenging harmful myths and misconceptions.
